The Landfill Directive has brought about a change in the way we manage waste in this country.
It has changed the way we manage waste to reduce the potential for it to pollute surface water, groundwater, soil, air, and also contribute to climate change.
In England and Wales the ongoing requirements of the Directive are applied under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010:
The requirements for existing sites were implemented by July 2009. The Directive is supported by a Council Decision (2003/33/EC) that specifies waste acceptance procedures and criteria under Article II of the Directive.
The directive sets targets to reduce the amount of biodegradable municipal waste sent to landfill.
- Landfill Directive - What is our role?
We are the regulatory body responsible for implementing the Landfill Directive in England and Wales. We do this in a variety of ways, such as the permitting of waste management facilities and administratation of the Landfill Allowance Trading Scheme.
