As part of the Flood Awareness Wales Programme we work closely with community groups, businesses, schools and partner organisations to help develop community flood plans to protect the whole community from flooding.
What is a community flood plan?
A community flood plan is a written document that outlines the actions a community will take during a flood incident. Our community engagement officers will work with a community leader or representative to help them complete this document, which will then be tested and practiced by the community.
Flood warden schemes
As well as helping develop community flood plans, we also work closely with communities to encourage flood warden schemes. Flood wardens are volunteers who act as the eyes and ears on the ground. They will warn a set number of properties of an impending flood risk if a flood warning for the area is issued, and will be responsible for putting the community flood plan into practice.
Case study
Last year we helped a care home in Kinmel Bay, North Wales to develop a community flood plan to protect its residents.
