Visiting the coast

Why our coast is important and how you can help protect it.

Why is the coast important?

Our coast and seas provide special areas for us to relax and enjoy leisure activities. They are also vital for marine habitats and wildlife.

Our coast and seas also contribute a huge amount to our economy. Ninety five per cent of the UK's international trade in goods travel by sea and the combined net overseas earnings of maritime services and shipping is worth £2.5 billion a year.
