The role of others

The Environment Agency is the regulatory body responsible for monitoring and improving the quality of bathing waters in England and Wales. We work with the following government organisations and other regulatory bodies.

European Commission
The EC is responsible for delivering a consistent approach to bathing water monitoring across Europe.
Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
Defra is the government department responsible for bathing water policy and regulations in the UK.
Welsh Assembly Government
The WAG is responsible for bathing water policy and regulations in Wales.
Scottish Environment Protection Agency
SEPA is responsible for monitoring and improving bathing water quality in Scotland.
Northern Ireland Environment Agency
The NIEA is responsible for monitoring and improving bathing water quality in Northern Ireland.
Health Protection Agency
The HPA protects the health and well-being of the population through the provision of support and advice to all government departments and devolved administrations.

Blue Flag awards in England
Keep Britain Tidy administers the Blue Flag awards in England.
Blue Flag awards in Wales
Keep Wales Tidy administers the Blue Flag awards in Wales.
Marine Conservation Society
The MCS compiles the Good Beach Guide as part of its campaign for clean seas, improved water quality and the protection of the marine environment.
Surfers Against Sewage
SAS is an environmental group which campaigns for clean and safe recreational water.
Blue Gym
A social networking website and information resource designed to encourage recreation at the coast..
