Answers to questions you may have about the programme.

Can I apply by sending a CV and covering letter?

No, you’ll need to complete the online application form, accessed through the how to apply page. If you require any help completing the form, please contact us on 0845 601 2233 (choose option 1).

The Guaranteed Interview Policy scheme ensures that disabled candidates are offered an interview if they meet the minimum criteria for the programme. If you are applying through this scheme then we will accept CVs and reasonable alternative methods of application.

Can I start my online application and come back to it at a later date?

Yes. The application form is set up so that once you have registered you can return to the form as many times as you like. Please remember to save your changes upon exiting the form.

Can I apply for both the Local Authority and Environment Agency foundation degree programmes?

Yes. On the application form you can choose your three preferred location choices. These can be a mix of both programmes.

When will I hear from you after I’ve completed my application form?

Once you’ve applied, you’ll automatically receive an email acknowledging our receipt of your application. We aim to advise all candidates of the outcome of their application within three weeks of the closing date. It’s important to note that the majority of correspondence will be by email so please check your email account regularly. 

What is involved in the selection process?

We will check that you meet the minimum requirements for the programme and then screen your application in relation to the answers you’ve provided. If your application is successful you’ll be invited to an interview, which will involve a selection of exercises enabling you to demonstrate your skills and abilities.

Can existing employees of the Environment Agency apply for the programme?

Yes. We accept applications from our current employees. You’ll need to ensure that you meet the academic requirements for the programme and apply via the online application form.

What’s the closing date for applications?

The closing date is midnight on Sunday 24 July 2011

Will I receive feedback on my application?

We regret that we are unable to provide feedback at the application stage. However, if you attend an interview and request feedback, we’ll give detailed comments to help you understand your strengths and areas for improvement.

How many vacancies do you have on the programme?

We have 30 vacancies across Environment Agency and Local Authority locations.

How long is the programme?

The foundation degree programme lasts for two years. At the end you’ll be awarded an FdSc.

What’s the start date of the programme?

The start date will be early September 2011.

Is there an induction course?

Yes. Before joining your workplace you’ll attend a week-long induction hosted by the University of the West of England. It will take place in Bristol and you’ll have the opportunity to meet other trainees while learning about the academic and workplace requirements.

Is there a mentoring system?

Yes. Each trainee will be provided with a mentor who’ll offer support and guidance throughout the two-year programme.

What happens at the end of the programme?

Upon successful completion of the programme, you’ll be awarded an FdSc River and Coastal Engineering.  You’ll be encouraged to apply for Flood Risk Management positions, as they arise.
