Proposed standard rules permit (SR2010No4) Discharge to land: enzyme treated sheep dip
We intend to launch a standard permit for the discharge of enzyme treated sheep dip (ETSD), subject to final approval, as soon as sufficient stock of an acceptable enzyme treatment is available.
To take advantage of the standard permit an enzyme treatment product must be added to used sheep dip. The Environment Agency is aware of one suitable enzyme treatment product - Landguard OP-A - which achieves the desired results within a 12-hour period.
The manufacturers have informed us that due to current enzyme treatment production issues and concerns over the effectiveness of existing stock of Landguard OP-A an acceptable enzyme product is not currently available. We will continue to work with the manufacturers and UK distributors of Landguard OP-A to achieve a swift resolution.
In developing the ETSD permit, we have also worked closely with our key stakeholders, including the National Sheep Association (NSA), the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) and the Farmers’ Union of Wales (FUW). These stakeholders support our decision to temporarily postpone the launch of the permit until an acceptable enzyme product is available.
The safe discharge and/or disposal of all used sheep dip must be carried out in accordance with conditions outlined in your existing Groundwater Authorisation/Groundwater Regulations permit. Disposal of used sheep dip to land without such a permit is an offence.
The flexibility in the Environmental Permitting Regulations, currently laid before Parliament, means that we can introduce simple controls, such as this standard permit, as new processes or products enter the market.
