Remediation of the quarry

Environment Agency Wales investigations have identified that the most appropriate remediation option is to place an engineered cap over the waste mass in the quarry.

We are confident our plans will not have any adverse impacts on the quarry or the surrounding area. However, we will monitor vapour emissions before, during and after construction of the engineered cap to ensure that this is the case. On completion of the capping works, vapour monitoring results will be analysed to establish if any further works are required to deal with ground vapour.

In the long term, we will monitor the quality of ground and surface water to ensure our remediation solution is effective.

Next steps

We received planning permission on Thursday 1 September 2011 from Rhondda Cynon Taf Council to begin our remediation plan.

The site was cleared of vegetation and engineering work began in October 2011.

The engineering works are being managed by our specialist contractors, Dyer and Butler, and supervised by the design engineer Geotechnology.

Both companies will work in a safe and considerate manner to minimise disruptions to the community. The works are expected to be completed by the first week of February 2012.
