Fish are regarded as excellent indicators of environmental quality, and both angling and net fishing contribute substantially to the economies of both countries.

Our nations' fisheries, released in May 2004, is a survey of the fish populations in the rivers, streams and lakes in England and Wales. The most comprehensive survey of its kind, it gives details of how valuable our fisheries really are, how well they are faring and what stresses and strains are affecting them.
